And with a new 390 Sport CC—hull No. 100 since the model was introduced in 2010—powered by quad Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboards on jack plates, they did exactly that during their final run that saw the boat top out at a GPS-recorded 101 mph last Friday.

Nor-Tech principal Trond Schou and Raymond Roberts, who co-owns the full service Double R dealership with his brother, Peter, were on board the 39-footer, which was fully equipped with a full T-top, a stereo system, an additional row of bolsters and a sliding cooler/seat and a host of other amenities.

With two units showcased in a Formula Boats 350 CBR FX model, Ilmor Marine officially unveiled its new One Drive propulsion package at the Miami International Boat Show this morning. Nothing about powerboat demo rides during today’s Miami International Boat Show was easy. Between a long no-wake zone and the multiple water taxis that seemed to ignore it, just getting to open water—the kind where you push the throttles as far forward as you like—was a chore.

But darn if the ride I took with Teague Custom Marine’s Bob Teague and Ilmor Marine’s Paul Ray on a Formula 350 CBR FX model this morning wasn’t worth every bit of the effort. That’s because the comfortable 35-footer, which has become Formula’s hottest seller, was powered by Ilmor’s amazing new One Drive propulsion packages.

While the buzz and chatter about the XCAT Racing version of the Mercury Racing Verado 400R have been more or less constant since the popular four-stroke outboard was introduced at the 2015 Miami International Boat Show in February, the public got its first look at the new engine moments ago in the Florida Powerboat Club’s Key West Poker Run Village. Dubbed the Mercury Racing ROS—shorthand for Race Offshore—the supercharged outboard will see its official racing debut Nov. 19 during the 2015 XCAT World Series in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. According to a press release from the Fond du Lac, Wis., marine engine company, the XCAT series partnered with Mercury Racing in the development of the 2.6L engine that will “replace the existing fleet of Mercury Racing 2-stroke 2.5L EFI race outboards.”

No offense to other Statement Marine owners, but the new 38’ SUV delivered to Houston performance boater Jeff Campbell in time for the Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run is the coolest one I’ve seen. The fact that there are four Mercury Racing Verado 400R engines powering the 38-foot center console was most definitely impressive, but I was more wowed by the details—inside and out.

Earlier this week, photographer Pete Boden stopped by the Doug Wright Designs shop in Melbourne, Fla., to catch up on a couple of ongoing projects including a new 32-footer that will be rigged at Grant’s Signature Racing and repairs on the 2015 Stock-class world championship-winning Talbot Excavating raceboat. While walking through the shop, Boden spied a deck plug for a new 28-foot catamaran taking final shape on the company’s CNC machine and he snapped a picture of it on his smart phone. Once finished, the deck plug will sent to Texas-based Fat Cat Boats. (The hull plug has already been completed and delivered.)
