Verado-Powered Skater 368 Update: Meeting Of The Minds In Michigan
On track for completion by the time its engines are delivered in December, the first Skater Powerboats 368 catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 400R outboards reached another milestone yesterday when owner Matt Rice and Grant Bruggemann met with Peter Hledin, the owner and founder of the famed custom high-performance powerboat company, and his crew at the Skater plant in Douglas, Mich. The primary goal of the one-day round-trip from Florida to Michigan for Rice and Bruggemann, who’ll handle the installation and rigging of the outboards at his Grant’s Signature Racing Shop in Bradenton, was to make sure all the heights—deck, seats, etc.—met their expectations/specifications for the 36-footer.

MTI Water Tests New 340X Catamaran, Debut Set for Shootout Week
Two weeks ago MTI owner Randy Scism shared a few photos with me while we were aboard one of his company’s MTI-V 42 center consoles during the Pirates of Lanier Poker Run in Buford, Ga. The pictures were of MTI’s all-new 340X catamaran in the paint booth. The boat looked good, no doubt about it, but when I received the photos of the twin Mercury Racing Verado 400R-powered cat in the water yesterday, the company’s first 34-footer looked even better.

On the new-boat side of FB Marine Group’s business, which is based in Fort Lauderdale and has two other locations in South Florida, no brand is stronger than Statement Marine. “The next 35 will be our first with twin Mercury Racing 400R Verado outboard engines on jack-plates,” said Sweers. “We are building it for Bryan and Danyel Marquart, two of our best customers, who live in Beaumont, Texas. This is their first center console after owning several Nor-Tech catamarans.

With Mystic Powerboats' unrivaled history of success at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout—Mystic catamarans have taken home 11 of the last 13 Top Gun titles at the annual top-speed contest in Central Missouri—it’s only natural that Mystic will debut its latest C5000 catamaran there. The open-cockpit 50-footer is powered by twin Mercury Racing power-adjustable 1550/1350 engines and is owned by Slug Hefner, a well-known member of the performance-boating community.
“He can’t wait to get his hands on it,” said John Cosker, the owner and founder of Mystic based in DeLand, Fla. “Slug has owned so many boats, so many cats, that he’s just very easy going with the whole process. I enjoyed working with him.”
Mystic's John Cosker said he appreciates how the cat's pearl-white paintjob highlights its hull-and-deck lines.

Exclusive: MTI’s New 340X Catamaran Makes a Big Splash
There was an obvious sense of excitement amongst Randy Scism, the owner of founder of MTI in Wentzville, Mo., and Tim Gallagher, the company’s sales and marketing manager, earlier today at the docks of one MTI’s best customers when we were standing next to the very first 340X catamaran. And for good reason.

Big Thunder Marine Shows Off New Fountain 38 Lightning, Donzi 35 ZRO
Last Saturday morning, a full crew from Iconic Marine Group in Washington, N.C., and Big Thunder Marine in Osage Beach, Mo., climbed into a cruiser and two “soon-to-be-debuted” boats for a quick photo shoot on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks en route to Captain Ron’s in Sunrise Beach. The drivers of the all-new Donzi Marine 35 ZRO and Fountain Powerboats 38 Lightning soon realized as they made the long no-wake-zone-enforced idle toward the site of the 28th annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout that the boats were about to get an incredible amount of attention.

Outerlimits Introducing Outboard-Powered SL 41 Sportboat
Given the booming popularity of Mercury Racing’s Verado 400R outboard engine, it was only a matter of time before a set of them made their way onto the transom of a full-size offshore V-bottom. That’s happening now at Outerlimits Powerboats in Bristol, R.I., with the production of the first SL 41 "OB" being built for longtime Outerlimits customer Dave Burgess of Michigan.
European Boat Builder Adds Quad-Verado 400R-Powered 43-Foot Sportboat
Powered by four Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard engines, this 43-foot sportboat from Bernico International reportedly has reached 100 mph in intial testing.
Well known in Europe for building custom raceboats since 1991, Bernico International has released a sportboat version of its 43-foot offshore racing model powered by four Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard engines. The variable deadrise twin-step V-bottom sportboat, which weighs approximately 10,000 pounds, was designed in-house using computer-modeling technology and scale-model testing at the Belgium-based company, according to its founder and owner Nico Bertel. The boat was completed last month.
“We have seen 100 mph,” said Bertel. “We have done a couple of trials on a lake, but no sea trial yet. We have been testing on smooth water to make sure we balance the boat. Once we reach that stage, we’ll begin sea trials.
Another three Verado 400R-powered models reportedly have been ordered since the first 43-footer with quad outboards was completed.
“We haven’t done a press release (on the new boat) in Europe yet,” he added. “The customer took it on holiday for two weeks. Now we have it back and will do more testing. The owner wants more speed, of course, but it has to be right.”
Bertel said he has three more orders for the 43-footer, which comes with shock-absorbing suspension seats that, like everything else at Bernico International, is built in house. He was inspired to build the boat, he added, by the current crop of performance-oriented Verado outboard-powered center consoles "but hadn't seen them on an offshore boat."
The boat is equipped with shock-absorbing seats built in house at the company (click image to enlarge).
“We’ve done one and have more ordered so we’re really, really happy,” he said. “We’re very thrilled about this boat.”
Editor's Note: Speedonthewater.com will provide additional test results and updates on this model as they become available.

MTI Wrapping Up Top-Secret Cat to Debut in Key West
Deep in the middle of a move into the newly opened Haulover Marine Center in North Miami, which has been revitalized by Westrec Marinas, Xtreme Powerboats owner Larry Goldman is flying to Wentzville, Mo., this week to check in on a new MTI being built for one of his highest-profile customers.

Tuff Marine Adding New 24-Footer
Tuff Marine president Mark Weigl is so early in the process of designing his company’s next boat that he’s not even sure about the overall length, but that didn’t stop two customers from buying the first pair.
“There’s already two pre-sold and I haven’t even shown anyone a picture of it,” said Weigl. The buyers who have committed to buying the first two are both owners of Tuff 21s and they wanted bigger boats. The company builds a 28-footer, but it’s too big for many of the boathouses on Canada’s Lake Muskoka, where many Tuff boat owners live and boat, so Weigl decided on a new boat in the 24-foot range.

Sjogren will leave the event with a DCB Performance Boats M29 catamaran, the first of three he’s commissioned for future customers in Missouri and states East of the Mississippi, with twin Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard engines. The first 29-footer will be a “demo boat" in the Shogren showroom—at least until it sells—as well as a boat the company principal plans to showcase at winter events in the Fort Myers, Fla., area.
